I will illustrate the use of groupoids in the study of KMS states and weights on C*-algebras. The KMS condition, which was introduced in quantum statistical mechanics to characterize equilibrium states, plays a crucial role in the theory of von Neumann algebras. The study of KMS states and their phase transitions on specific C*-algebras, in particular graph algebras, is an active field of research where the groupoid techniques are well adapted.

Jean Renault现任法国奥尔良大学教授, 主要研究方向为动力系统和算子代数. 研究成果包括群胚C*-代数的结构、群胚及其C*-代数的Morita等价、拓扑群胚的顺从性、Radon-Nikodym上链的研究、C*-代数的Cartan子代数的概念和Hilbert丛上的仿射群胚作用. Jean Renault教授的博士论文《A Groupoid Approach to C*-algebras》现已成为研究群胚C*-代数的基本文献.
